For Just Friends - Various - Verves Grammy Winners non-cognoscente, winning a Grammy award might indicate a best effort from an artist in any particular year. To the performer or publicist, it's something to be promoted and proud of. Jazz listeners are not likely to care all that much, given how the music is routinely snubbed.
It's nice that the Verve label made this collection of 15 selections that won Grammys, but it is not at all that indicative of any trends when the individual tracks were winners. There are three cuts of note from Ella Fitzgerald and two apiece by Stan Getz perhaps the only real trendsetter in his day with the bossa nova crazeBill Evansand Count Basie. Overall, this is a good collection of music, but perhaps picked for other than artistic reasons, consistent Vhom (No Ragga Vox) - Tom Tom MaChicken - Vhom what the overly commercialized and politically influenced Grammys have always been all about.
