The First Noel - The Longines Symphonette - Avon Wishes You A Happy Holiday And A Joyous New Year think my grandfather ran the "Longines Symphonette Society" label Location: Sitting in a bunker, here behind my wall.
Someone brought some of these in to work last week to have them converted to The First Noel - The Longines Symphonette - Avon Wishes You A Happy Holiday And A Joyous New Year . A friend of mine said he finally knew what the They Might Be Giants reference was referring to.
Now I know what you're referring to. PinknikNov 30, I have to hand it to your grandfather, since he would have been at the forefront of the first wave of the "box-set movement.
Not so. Long before those came out, the Longines Symphonette Society and, to a lesser extent, Reader's Digest, were issuing true box sets -- massive 8-LP boxes with detailed liner notes and deluxe packaging. Granted, LSS was at the mercy of its partner record labels when it came to the quality of source tapes that were provided, but LSS did go the extra mile in compiling authoritative, logically sequenced retrospectives that were of pretty high quality for that era. I recently bought a sealed copy of the well-known LSS Nat King Cole box and was impressed by the heavy slipcase construction, the deluxe inner sleeves, the enclosed booklet, the certificate of authenticity, etc.
Here's a photo of the set:. Clark KauffmanNov 30, Location: Central VA. I still see them in the bins once in a while. Location: Toronto. I too recall the TV comercials of the 70s. The same set with photos that Mr. Kauffman provide earlier in this link. The sound is good and the set is in great shape. I cleaned it years back and burned it for my Mother. I've yet to clean and play this set, however. Perhaps this thread will get me to put it in the "to be cleaned" pile.
Brian JNov 30, Location: Canada. IIRC, the Longines Symphonette Society record company grew out of a music radio show that ran from the mid s to the late '50s. The record division closed down in the mid s, but after about thirty years, most of which were very profitable.
Jack WhiteNov 30, Location: Rhode Island. This is wild. I was just thinking about these. Thanks to my parents, I have a ton of them. Many many box sets of what my mom used to call "longhair music," several of the old time radio ones, a couple of volumes called "The Roaring Twenties," and the Orson Wells broadcast. Love them. GMDussNov 30, Location: Quebec City, Canada. Splendid thread Lads! Thanks for sharing all of your memories!
Simon ANov 30, Location: eastern us. Still have it, never been played I did open it up though! Here's a pic I borrowed off google: Also, didn't Longines offer portable record players though the mail?
Seems like I remember one offered in TV Guide back in the '60s. Highway StarDec 1, Location: Youngstown, Ohio. The discs are all packaged in heavy paper sleeves lined with polyethlyline. Five albums, 12 tracks each, all primo Capitol stuff. The record label has the P symbol in a circle with after it. I don't recall how I came by this, but I've always enjoyed it.
Great story about your grandfather! MikeMDec 1, Location: Arcadia, Ca. Bought the Sinatra set because had an "extra" disc with unreleased track s. TeacFanDec 1, Hi-Fi Low-LifeDec 1, Location: San Luis Obispo California. I think there are a couple of albums that Bing Crosby recorded for Longines late in life. One was poorly regarded by the opinion I heard and the other was better. Those are the only ones I know of in particular I'd like to hear. But being a classic pop fan I might like a selection of them.
Glad to hear he was a nice guy. Your grandfather did very well indeed. Helped make something which didn't hurt anyone but brought joy and enjoyment to many. Location: Petaluma, CA. Location: Hudson,Florida U. I used to have the "Mexicali Brass" lp-it tried to cash in on the Tijuana Brass craze, albeit with minimum results,of course. Still,it was one of my personal favorites!! Michael Boyce. Location: Midway,Pa. I guess the next time I'm at Jerry's I'll be picking up Farbröder Och Tanter - Gunilla Bergström - Bill Och Hemliga Bolla Dean Martin set that's been there for a while.

Location: MissoulaMontana. LowRideDuhDec 1, Location: Allentown,pa. There were tons of titles, all with some fairly gaudy Christmas art reminisent of those 99 cent boxes of Christmas cards that Woolworths used to sell. I used to carry almost one of every Baby Love - Various - Kings Of Zion Part III (Vinyl, Album) title I could get my hands on,but even these looked a little too generic for me.
I think they listed for 5. Also,I think this was Rhino's first venture into budget material,pre-Flashback-label and, though distributed by WEA,this was before Warner bought them out.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand. Longines - 'Twas the night before christmas I was a trainee in a shipping company in Houston in The Photograph - Rick Springfield - Comic Book Heroes mid-sixties, and we boughtg a number of the albums from Longines. One was "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" - which has followed us for the last 40 years, and is played the entire monto of December. The kids loved it, and now I am making copies on CDs and Ipods for them to carry on to their children.
Location: philly more or less. The KeymasterSep 8, Location: New Jersey. Well here is a post or two or three about Longines Records from this thread last year.
